An all-new generation of the popular BMW X3 has been sighted undergoing testing around Germany the past week. Surprisingly, we know more about how the 4th-gen 2024 BMW X3 looks than what’s under the hood.
The current G01 version has been in production in South Carolina since 2017 and has been quite successful. It received almost constant upgrades, like mild-hybrid systems added to normal engines, the first-ever X3 M and a mid-life facelift over a year ago.
BMW likes to keep things fresh, especially in the competitive small premium vehicle segment, which is why it’s already begun testing the 2024 X3. One prototype even had a quad exhaust system, the trademark of an M model.
The X3 already has a strong competitor in the 2nd-generation Mercedes GLC-Class, which has just been revealed. Interestingly, Daimer believes the X3 isn’t powered by the right engine because the GLC only comes with 2.0-liter turbo systems, probably including the upcoming AMG models. Thankfully, BMW has assured us nothing of the sort will happen with its contender.
If you’d like to see what a 2025 BMW X3 might look like without any camo, just check out these two renderings from the website Kolesa. They show the small SUV from both the front and rear angles. Some elements are familiar, while others are new.
From the front, this appears very streamlined with much smaller openings for the air intakes. It’s possible that BMW will eventually make a full transition towards EVs, and a design like this makes the evolution more natural. But unlike a Tesla, the X3 has dominant grille openings. The headlights are taken from the all-new X1 that just made its debut.
In profile, the influence of the i4 and the iX becomes apparent, as the next-gen X3 is smoother, with aero wheels and flush-fitting door handles. With its cladding and sharp lines, the 2003 X3 looks like an angry warthog by comparison.
Finally, we arrive at the rear end, where the X3 once again takes inspiration from other BMW models. It sports much narrower 3D-designed taillights and a wagon-like sloping roof, much like the XM.
These are early days for the 2024 BMW X3, which has a lot of testing ahead of it. Further details could be revealed over time, but at this point, it’s pretty much guaranteed that electric versions will be available. There’s a ban on internal combustion engines looming over Europe, and both the Porsche Macan and Audi Q5 are expected to have EV models within a few years.
