Oh, how times are changing—just two weeks ago, Chevrolet presented the 2024 Blazer EV. The crossover marks the first time an all-electric offering bears the Blazer name (born in the 1960s for the full-size K5 SUV), as well as the Super Sport badge, which came around in the 1950s via the Corvette before moving on to muscle cars like the Camaro. Speaking of the ‘Maro, GM has yet to mention anything about the future of its muscle model, leaving this up to digital creations like this one. Enter the 2024 Chevrolet Camaro EV Wagon, a pixel proposal that mixes old fantasies with new ones.
These days, GM is hard at work on the battery front, from the introduction of the said Blazer EV to its all-electric truck efforts, which include the already-out-to-play GMC Hummer EV, and the 2024 Chevy Silverado EV/ 2024 GMC Sierra EV, which are in the final stages of brewing. So, what about the Camaro?
Sales of Chevy’s muscle cars have been falling behind those of its Ford and Dodge rivals over the past few years, with GM doing next to nothing to remedy the situation. And with the current sixth-gen Camaro having been in production since 2015, retirement is night. And all we have so far are speculations about a switch to battery power, with these based on a 2020 teaser showcasing what appears to be an electric sedan with a Camaro-like silhouette—you’ll find this in the image gallery below.
So, as mentioned in the intro, digital artists have taken it upon themselves to portray a seventh-generation Camaro riding on a muscle-tailored version of GM’s Ultimum platform.
This Camaro Electric Wagon independent CGI packs production ingredients
And while we’ve already featured a rendering showcasing a traditional coupe form for the 2024 Camaro EV, today’s effort throws the decades-old Camaro Wagon fantasy into the mix.
The idea of a Camaro estate dates back to 1967, when the original ‘Maro was introduced. That year, GM tasked Fisher Body, a company it owned at the time, with building a two-door Camaro Wagon. Alas, this remained an internal concept and never saw the flashing lights of an auto show, let alone morph into a production model. And for this 2D work, graphic designer Jim (aka jlord8), brought together the current Camaro and the 2024 Blazer EV. And the result appears cohesive, at least to these eyes.
Now, the US market lost its love of wagons back in the 1980s, when minivans took over, offering extra cabin room and superior efficiency. And with SUVs and crossovers having cannibalized the latter meanwhile, ICE (internal combustion engine) station wagons are an extremely rare sight in U.S. showrooms these days.
Electric wagons are alive in Europe and China
However, over in Europe and, to a lesser extent, in China, the market has already welcomed all-electric station wagons and is preparing for the arrival of multiple such models. For the time being, the Porsche Taycan Sport and Cross Turismo derivatives serve that purpose, but these high-end models will be joined by a plethora of fresh arrivals targeting multiple segments of the market.
Examples of upcoming electric wagons involve premium models (Audi A6 Avant e-tron, BMW i5 Touring and i3 Touring, Volvo V60/V90 replacement, Lexus estate) to high-tier mainstream models (VW Aero B Estate, Skoda Octavia Combi EV sibling, Hyundai Ioniq 6 Shooting Brake) and budget-conscious offerings from China (BYD Han EV Estate, MG5 EV).
Most of the models mentioned above have already been previewed by concept cars, while a few are almost ready to hit the market, but there are also some that we’re not certain of (e.g., Hyundai, Volvo).
Ford and Dodge have already released a part of their electrified muscle car plans
Regardless, while we’re not expecting GM to give us a Camaro electric wagon, we can at least hope that this legendary nameplate remains in the game in some form or another (think: propulsion and body style). For one, the other two members of Detroit’s Big Three have already outlined important parts of their future muscle car plans.
So, while Ford will debut the seventh-generation Mustang next year, with the V8 power set to be maintained, possibly courtesy of hybridization, Dodge will introduce the world’s first electric muscle car as a concept later this month, with a production model set to land in 2024.
