The 2024 Volvo EM90 has already been teased and detailed by the Swedish automaker. The first minivan or MPV in the company’s history will debut this November and is expected to be a redesigned version of a vehicle made in China, called the Zeekr 009.
While SUVs are generally dominant all over the world, minivans or MPVs are still a significant part of the luxury market all over Asia. They provide classy, efficient transportation with a lot of legroom. In November 2023, Volvo will launch its first such minivan called the EM90. And while we’d love to see rental companies having this instead of a Chrysler Pacifica, the EM90 will sadly not be available in America.
Many famous brands already have minivans: Volkswagen, Mercedes, and even Buick. But the most famous minivan coming out of China has to be the Lexus LM. A new one just came out and while prices start from 819,000 yuan ($120,000), they can go as high as $220,000.
Paying Bentley money for a minivan is unthinkable in the West, but the Lexus LM must be so prestigious that Volvo wants to get in on the action.
Volvo EM90 design
The Volvo EM90 will be based on an existing vehicle called the Zeekr 009. The overall proportions and some of the design will be kept, but Volvo will make its minivan look like the existing models it offers.
Based on teasers and spy photos, a lot of rendering experts have created images that show the EM90 looking like a van version of the EX90. This is Volvo’s flagship EV model, essentially a battery-powered version of the new XC90.
The trademark features include pixel-like elements in the headlights and a blocked-off grille, creating a Tesla-like nose. These images come from the website Kolesa and show the 2024 Volvo EM90 from both the front and the rear.
Zeekr is a premium Chinese automotive brand, part of Geely Automobile Holdings. It was founded in 2021. The Zeekr 009 measures a massive 5,209mm long (205 inches) with a wheelbase of 3205mm (126 in). It, and thus the Volvo EX90, is based on the Sustainable Experience Architecture (SEA1), shared with the Lotus Eletre SUV.
The Volvo EM90 will feature a 111 kWh battery pack and up to 510 horsepower in dual-motor configurations. Prices will be in the region of $90,000.
