Toyota GR86 Countach Leans on Lamborghini to Fill the Super Sport Gap in Quick Render

Over the weekend, Toyota’s Gazoo Racing arm, which handles motorsport and performance road cars, secured the fourth consecutive win at the 24 Hours of Le Mans. The Japanese carmaker’s GR010 prototype racer grabbed the first and second spots on the podium. Alas, its road-going equivalent, the GR Super Sport, is still missing in action. So a digital artist imagined this sort of range-topper based on a Lamborghini Countachโ€”you know what they say about desperate times and the measures they requireโ€ฆ

As the top classes in endurance racing were starting to feel considerably less spectacular last decade, we rejoiced when finding out a new top tier dubbed Le Mans Hypercar (LMH) would arrive. And while 2022 marks the inaugural LMH season, it seems that American team Scuderia Cameron Glickenhaus (#3 spot behind Toyota at Le Mans 2022) is the only participant still standing behind the original principle that was supposed to see racers getting road-legal siblingsโ€”the rules no longer require this homologation special twist.

Toyota, which had unveiled the GR Super Sport concept in early 2018 and was already in the advanced stages of developing this street-legal equivalent of the said endurance race car seems to have taken a step back last year. Following a reported fire experienced by one of the pre-production prototypes, the carmaker said it would put the project on hold, albeit without making the future of the project clear.

As the not-offered-in-America AMG One, essentially a Formula One race car for the road (street body included), has shown, it can be extremely complicated to deliver cutting-edge motorsport tech within the constraints of a road vehicle. And, despite its recent victory, Toyota remains tight-lipped on the subject.

Pixel masters often step in to expand Toyota’s glorious GR range, which currently includes the GR Yaris, GR Corolla, GR 86, and, of course, the GR Supra. We normally get more plausible models, such as this 2023 GR Camry. However, the proposal sitting before us seem like a spectacular way to tell Toyota that we want our GR Super Sportโ€”you can find an official prototype “spy video” at the bottom of the story.

GR86 X Countach

For this piece, the artist known as carfrontswaps on Instagram chose the insanely popular Toyota GR86 and theโ€ฆ insane Lamborghini Countach. And we have to admit the mix doesn’t look half bad.

In fact, this rendering makes us wonder if Japanese tuner Tra Kioto used the Countach’s front flares as inspiration when creating the Pandem Rocket Bunny widebody for the GR86โ€”by the way, the package recently got an updated V1.5 version, which we can’t wait to see on the street.
