The BMW X2 is supposed to be a premium compact SUV with sporty coupe styling. However, it doesn’t look like its famous big brother, the X6. This is something the German automaker will fix with the all-new second-generation 2024 BMW X2.
Sales of the BMW X2 began in March 2018 for the US market and the baby Sports Activity Coupe has always struggled. Sales dropped from 16,000 units that year to just 2,641 X2s in 2022. That’s frankly not enough to keep the model alive, but the X2 was flawed from the beginning.
Coupe SUVs are supposed to be profitable because people will pay extra for the sleek styling. However, the X2 had the proportions of a little crossover, and because it was so small, they couldn’t make a sloping roof.
But rather than give up, BMW set to work creating something which resembles the legendary X6, but in a crossover package. A bigger body with a long rear overhang is perfect for creating the sloped roof which people still love. And because it’s based on the all-new X1, we know it will be packed with fresh tech, including all-electric powertrains.
The all-new 2024 BMW X2 is months away from being revealed, most likely at the 2023 LA Auto Show in November. But you don’t have to wait that long to see its design.
The website Kolesa has created a set of renderings that we believe accurately depict the 2nd-gen X2. These are based on recent spy photos. The bottom part of the body is quite similar to the X1, but not identical. The X2 has a specific front bumper design with a large V-shaped lower grille and a bespoke double kidney grille that resembles the X6.
The rear is also at least an inch longer, and the trunk is obviously different, still a hatchback, but with more slope. Another key difference: the number plate is located on the bumper, not the tailgate, again something seen on the bigger X6. Overall, the roof is slightly lower, and they don’t install roof rails to enhance the illusion. Also, the side has one less window than the X1, which gives it that pillbox look that all coupes get.
2024-2025 BMW X2 engines (iX2)
The 2024 BMW X2 will have a variety of available engines, starting with a base 1.5-liter turbo, mostly sold in Europe. Plug-in hybrids are very popular in this segment, and the X2 xDrive30e will fill that roll, offering 312 hp. But the 312 hp X2 M35i will be the most desirable engine.
The 2024 BMW X2 will be priced at $43,000 in the United States for the xDrive28i model with 241 horsepower. Meanwhile, the X2 M35i will be closer to $52,000.
BMW has already confirmed the all-electric iX2 will enter production this year. The overall design will be quite similar to the X2, but it will be the first all-electric Sports Activity Coupe that the brand has ever produced.
Official specs haven’t been released, but the iX2 should have the xDrive30 powertrain from the iX1, with dual motors producing 313 horsepower and 364 pound-feet (494 Nm) of torque, good for 0 to 62 mph sprints in 5.7 seconds. The battery is on the small side at 64.7 kWh, so expect a range of up to 230 miles (EPA).
