2024 G90 BMW M5 Plug-In Hybrid Sedan Gets Early Reveal Thanks to Unofficial Renderings

The BMW M5 is perhaps the best performance sedan on the planet right now. However, development has started on a next-gen M5 which will be codenamed the G90. It’s expected to arrive in 2024 and will feature some drastic powertrain changes compared to the F90.

The 2024 BMW M5 is expected to be the first full-electrified M sedan. The most likely powertrain for this 4-door rocket is a combination of a 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 with an e-motor, similar to the XM. Ever since its introduction in 1984, the M5 has been equipped with an inline-6, a V8, a V10 and now electric motors as well.

The 2024 BMW M5 will make 653 horsepower right out of the box, sources say. That should be enough for the G90 generation to outgun the F90 M5 CS. However, due to the added bulk of the 25.7 kWh battery pack, it may not be faster. That’s why an ever better powertrain with about 750 horsepower will be taken from the XM Label Red and given to the next M5 CS.

Test prototypes for the 2024 BMW M5 have already begun testing at the Nurburgring race track in preparation for this big debut. BMW is developing systems such as all-wheel steering, performance ceramic brakes, brake energy recuperation, and active anti-roll bars with ride-height control. The Bavarian automaker has always been a pioneer in this segment ever since it introduced drive modes to its M cars.

Ironically, the M5 might also be the last 5 Series with a V8 since the M550i xDrive is rumored to become obsolete. In its place, BMW will offer the M560e with an M Performance powertrain consisting o an inline-6 and electric motor. There’s also the rumor of a G99 M5 Touring, the wagon body style which hasn’t been offered since the V10 model in 2010.

2024 BMW M5: the design

The unveiling date for the new generation of the M5 is set for 2024. We don’t possess any official photos of the car yet. However, it’s reasonable to expect a more aggressive version of the 5 Series.

Thanks to a number of recent sightings at the Nurburgring, such as the video below, we have a pretty good understanding of the design and can predict the G90 M5’s look. These renderings from our friends at Kolesa show the ultimate driving machine from both the front and the back.

The main visual improvements are at the front, where the new grille design looks much like the XM. The M5 is as wild and angry as a grizzly bear. The grille design won’t deviate as much from the “Series” car as it does with the M3. However, the horizontal bars do set it apart.

The bumper of the car extends further on the M5 and is finished off with a deep intake at the bottom of the front bumper. This has a trapezoidal shape and is flanked by much smaller intakes to cool the brakes.

The M5 also has a different stance with wider tracks, beefier fenders, and a larger set of 21-inch wheels. The rear is topped off by a quad exhaust system and revised taillights.

Inside, the M5 will be a continuation of the M3 and M4 with carbon fiber track seats and a sporty steering wheel. The dash will share parts with the 5 Series, like the iDrive 8.5 system and the digital gauges (with M-specific graphics).
