2024 Ford Mustang 2.3L EcoBoost Spied in the Wild With Two Tailpipes

The Fast Lane has just spotted a 2024 EcoBoost Mustang test prototype in the wild, most likely undergoing high-altitude testing in Colorado. What’s funny is that Roman Mica, the guy filming the video, was driving a Bronco Raptor from Ford at the time.

This incident is not only funny, but it also proves Ford is a maker of cool things. Let’s not forget the all-new S650 Mustang isn’t the only hot upcoming debut. The 700+ Raptor R is almost ready to come out, and the Ranger Raptor is next.

Sadly, this particular S650 Mustang could be the least exciting Ford performance product of them all. Roman was curious if the prototype had “two or four or zero tailpipes”. It turns out that two muffler tips were fitted, and you know what that means, right?! EcoBoostโ€ฆ probably.

Ford is dumping billions to develop all-electric car while trying to cope with parts shortages, so it’s expected that the 2024 Mustang won’t offer all-new engines. As such, the S650 generation, the 7th, will offer the 2.3-liter EcoBoost four-cylinder alongside the 5.0-liter Coyote V8.

Electrification is rumored to affect both powertrains at some point, but this could come later in time or affect only the models that have to be shipped to Europe. The 5.2-liter Predator V8, which motivates the Mustang GT500, is rumored to return in a high-performance model. A union leader in Canada said back in 2020 that the S650 would have a 6.8-liter V8, a 415 cubic-inch, while the 7.3-liter Godzilla truck engine has also been rumored. But honestly, both seem farfetched at this point.

Extra power for the 2024 EcoBoost Mustang?

Getting back to the prototype, this very clearly has only two exhaust tips, just like the current EcoBoost model. The 2.3-liter turbo engine fitted to 2022 models is rated at 310 horsepower and 350 pound-feet of torque. We believe that the equipment from the High Performance Pack will be standardized, so 2024 models will have 320-330 horsepower.

People love to hate the EcoBoost Mustang, but it’s honestly not that bad. Think of it as Ford’s answer to the Civic Type R and you’ll like it a little more. Plus, this displacement has been with the Mustang since the early days. The 1974 pony had a 2.3-liter Pinto engine, and this displacement mattered a lot during the Fox Body era.

While some questions remain regarding engines and their horsepower figures, that’s not the case with 2024 Mustang design. We’ve had leaks of the exterior and very clear shots of its all-new cabin layout with lots of nice, big screens.
