If you’ve been to Cars and Coffeeโor simply checked your Instagramโlately, you’ve probably seen your fair share of Toyota GR86s and 2022 Subaru BRZs. And while you’re about to see a lot more of these affordable sports cars, many of them will be fitted with mean aftermarket parts. Well, drivers of the JDM duo just got a new option, as YouTuber TJ Hunt just introduced the StreetHunter widebody kit for the BRZ and GR86.
The vlogger built most of his reputation by installing other companies’ body kits on his cars, with some of the most popular releases involving the first-generation Toyobaru. So, seeing him evolving to the point where he can introduce new designs under his own label makes for an inspirational tale.
The StreetHunter story kicked off in 2019, when TJ Hunt created the label and introduced a body kit for the C8 Corvette. The Mk V Supra followed and while the company also remained in the JDM arena for the 2023 Nissan Z development released earlier this year, that’s a widebody for Formula Drift driver Chris Forsberg’s GT-R-powered 400Z (a package for the road car is in the works too).
About three months ago, StreetHunter introduced a narrow-body kit for the GR86 and second-gen BRZ, while teasing a widebody proposal. And you are now looking at the latter, which is coming to the 2022 SEMA show in early November (here’s our list of goodies being prepped for the Las Vegas custom car event).
The widebody packs north of twenty pieces
The StreetHunter 2022 Subaru BRZ/Toyota GR86 widebody consists of over 20 pieces. Many of these are full replacement parts, while carbon fiber options are also offered. The front apron is the headliner here, with this showing the same design regardless of the model it is mounted on (keep in mind that the BRZ and GR86 also have different suspension setups, but this is another story for another time).
Now, when creating StreetFighter, TJ Hunt paired up with designer Jon Sibal (here’s another one of his Formula Drift efforts) and Dylan Coleman, the man behind the StreetFighter LA body kit producer. And while announcing the new Toyobaru kit, the enthusiast invited the said designer to explain the roots of the aesthetics seen here via Zoom.
That’s how we found out that the sharp styling cues displayed here, which make for the most aggressive StreetHunter release to date, are based on a time attack design Sibal created in early 2021. Of course, the heavy aero of that proposal (check it out at the 11:00 timestamp of the vid below) had to be toned down for this release.
Deep JDM inspiration running across multiple brands
And the result is an eye-catching mix that also integrates visual tricks from the Toyota GR Corolla, while displaying competition-inspired bits such as the gaping rear overfenders. As a bonus, die-hard Nissan fans will probably recognize the R34 GT-R Z-Tune inspiration for the front overfenders.
Note that these bits are compatible with the said narrow-body offerings, so that cheeky ducktail spoiler is back. And while the pricing isn’t available yet, the photorealistic renderings below allow one to pick between a cherry-like and a silver take on the widebody.
