Move over Lamborghini Urus, because there’s a brand new king of performance SUVs! A drag race between the Urus and an Aston Martin DBX 707 has been released, and the video clearly shows a big speed gap.
The Urus is unlikely to be truly dethroned until the Ferrari Purosangue arrives. Lamborghini just makes the perfect supercar shapes that resonate with the kind of people who can afford these toys. But this drag race is still a huge victory for Aston Martin!
Why? Well, the company has been struggling to get noticed. The new Vantage and the DBS Superleggera are both amazing cars, but they can’t get the kind of attention an SUV can. A quick visit to toy stores will show you that even kids are into super-SUVs now.
The DBX is Aston’s first SUV, much like the Urus is the first Lamborghini SUV in mass production. Both started out with a 4.0-liter V8 engine of German origin. But the DBX only made 542 horsepower and 516 pound-feet (700 Newton-meters) of torque in its base form.
Meanwhile, the Urus produces 641 horsepower and 627 pound-feet (850 Newton-meters) of torque. It hasn’t received any updates, but the DBX did. This is the brand new DBX 707. The name denotes its 707 PS power output, which translates to 687 hp, while torque has been boosted to 664 pound-feet (900 Newton-meters).
Obviously, power isn’t everything. We’ve seen Astons lose drag races, even when their V12s took on V8 rivals. Launch control and traction play a key part too. And let’s not forget what kind of engine the 707 uses. You’d think that it’s the DBS twin-turbo 5.2-liter. But now, this is still the 4.0-liter, but fitted with upgraded ball-bearing turbochargers.
What’s the fastest SUV in the world?
You can think of it as a British SUV twist of the AMG GT Black Series. But it’s a shame Stellantis axed the Jeep Trackhawk and the Durango Hellcat for 2022. Otherwise, they’d still e competing in the 700 hp heavyweight class.
Anyway, the Carwow drag race is a first. DBX 707 reviews haven’t even started yet, and Mat Watson is the only person in the world to drag race this SUV. His rival is none other than Yianni, the most famous Urus owner in Britain. He’s quite good at drag racing this Italian 4×4 and this is his second one because apparently, the first Urus had too many miles on it. I swear this guy buys more supercars than I do pairs of socks.
Sure, the 57 horsepower gap is in favor of the DBX 707, but we were still surprised to see it gap its Italian rival many times, in both drag races and rolling races.
But this is a short-lived victory. The Tesla Model X Plaid will undoubtedly hold onto its acceleration titles, though you could argue that it hasn’t got the top speed. And on top of that, many new models are on the way with huge power. We believe BMW will have a 750 horsepower plug-in V8 SUV, as should Mercedes-AMG. Also, there’s no denying the excitement added by the 800 horsepower GMC Hummer and Rivian R1S which are on their way.
