Doug DeMuro Will Love the 2025 Mercedes E-Class All-Terrain, Here’s Why

The E-Class All-Terrain is possibly the least popular car Mercedes-Benz makes. Most people don’t even know it exists and can’t see the point of putting body cladding on a luxury wagon with a V6 engine. But there’s one very famous YouTuber who likes the All-Terrain and has even bought one, Doug DeMuro.

The E-Class All-Terrain banks on the success of the Mercedes model as a luxury family car and tries to adopt the Audi Allroad formula, lifting the suspension, installing AWD, and a body kit. Unfortunately, the formula created with the A6 Allroad back in 1999 pre-dates the birth of the SUV and doesn’t really work.

That’s why Audi themselves are canceling the Allroad. Yet surprisingly, Mercedes-Benz is developing a second generation of the E-Class All-Terrain, which has been spotted undergoing testing. Based on these sightings, we have a good understanding of how this new model will look and what will set it apart from its rivals.

The wagon market in America is tiny, less than 2% of the total in terms of sales. And most of those sales go to a wagon… that isn’t really a wagon, the Subaru Outback. The most expensive one is about $50,000, so the 2025 Mercedes E-Class All-Terrain can easily outdo it, considering it will average at $75,000.

Mercedes is by far Doug DeMuro’s favorite car brand. He’s bought all kinds, including a short G-Wagon, but has always had a soft spot for the wagons. 10 years ago, he bought a 2007 Mercedes E63 AMG. That’s the one with four round lights and an aspirated 507 hp V8. Then in 2017, he bought another E63 Wagon, this time the twin-turbo variety.

You could tell that every time he tested a Mercedes wagon he was tempted to buy one, especially the CLS Shooting Brake. Then 4 months ago, the latest Doug mobile was announced to the world, a used 2021 E450 All-Terrain. It’s a replacement for the Land Rover Defender he had purchased two years prior.

So what can Doug expect from the 2025 E-Class All-Terrain?

Well, the W214 E-Class sedan has already been revealed, which means we know what most of the bodywork looks like. But the website Kolesa still had to render the sedan into a wagon and then apply the All-Terrain body kit on top.

They’ve done an excellent job with their renderings, which are not only believable but also accurate. This next generation of E-Class is defined by its streamlined design, but it does have distinctive elements in the headlights and star logos embedded in the taillights.

The All-Terrain package adds about an inch of lift to the suspension and wraps all the fenders in black plastic. There’s also some chrome at the bottom of the bumpers, similar to what you see on certain trim levels of SUVs, like the GLC and GLE. The end result is a chassis that will be known as the X214 (internal codename of 2025 E-Class All-Terrain).

In the last E450 All-Terrain, like the one Doug has, Mercedes installed a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-6 making 362 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque. This general layout will still be available. However, engineers are installing a new battery that allows the electric motor of the hybrid system to have more power and torque.

We wouldn’t be surprised if the E-Class All-Terrain also offers one plug-in hybrid powertrain. These are available on the regular sedan and have a 24 kWh battery which can be charged in only 30 minutes. They can also be driven at over 50 mph in EV mode, although the 3rd row of seats in the wagon will be sacrificed.

On the technology front, the X214 should be available with rear-wheel-steering, which can make the turning circle shorter by almost 3 feet. And inside, there will be plenty of features borrowed from the larger S-Class, like three scenes, one of which is in front of the passenger.
