Every Mustang generation has sparked its fair share of debate. And for the S650, the point that splits the camps is the commonality to the S550, so the discussions aren’t all that unlike those in the 911 community at times. Then again, now that the seventh-generation Mustang is out on the street, it may be easier to point out some of the benefits of the similitudes to the sixth-gen pony. And these bagged 2024 Mustangs flexing their air suspension systems are an example as good as any.
We might as well be looking at the first 2024 Ford Mustang lowered on air suspension here. An image of the car was uploaded by Redditor KhyGuyYT, portraying a Rapid Red S650 with its factory 19-inch Premier Polished aluminum wheels tucked deep inside the fenders. The good news mentioned in the intro is that I was able to find at least one S550 aftermarket air suspension kit that also kits the S650.
Interestingly, the pic, which was snapped at a car meet held in a fast-food parking lot, shows a Ford Probe staring the S650 in the eye. You know, the late 1980s model that almost took the place of the Mustang before Ford listened to fans and gave us the SN-95. Speaking of which, this Shirokai SN-95 New Edge widebody stays fresh while keeping that old-school look alive.
Now, there are some ponies out there featuring lowering springs (aka a static setup), such as the Lightning McQueen 2024 Mustang However, judging by the microscopic ground clearance that would make everyday driving almost impossible, this one is on air suspension.
Even if you enjoy lowered cars, you probably won’t be pleased with the fitment seen here, as the factory wheel offset and camber hardly bring the kind of aesthetics one expects from a slammed 2024 Mustang. Then again, it looks like the owner simply decided to drop the car before getting a custom wheel setup, so I wouldn’t dwell on this.
And to help with that, I’ve added a photo of a bagged Race Red 2024 Mustang GT flexing its air suspension to the gallery, thanks to Steeda. This is a GT Premium with the Performance Package and, at least for now, features the factory 19-inch black painted aluminum wheels. It uses an Air Lift Performance kit (more on this below). And, as with the Lightning McQueen S650 mentioned above, the owner, Greg Marshall, is an S550 driver who had bagged his sixth-gen ‘Stang.
The S550 Mustang air suspension also fits the S650
As any Mustang fan will tell you, there’s no such thing as a factory air suspension for the pony. However, with the bagged 2024 Mustang showing up just months after deliveries for the seventh generation kicked off, it’s clear that the newcomer borrows its predecessor’s aftermarket gear.
For example, Air Lift Performance specifically mentions that its two S550 air suspension kits are also compatible with the S650, listing the 2015-2024 model years for the package.
These complete kits, which cost around $4,500 apiece, mean the 2024 Mustang gets a maximum drop of 5.0 inches (128 mm) up front and a 5.1 inches (130 mm) drop at the rear. This one’s pretty tight folksโbased on what the S550 offers, the S650 Mustang has a ground clearance of 6.0 inches.
Even so, it’s worth noting the kits only work with the Mustang’s standard shock absorbers, so you can’t have these air springs with the Magneride dampers.
And hey, if my chronology is right, the 2023 Toyota Prius got slammed before the 2024 Mustang, so the bagged community seems to have something for everybody these days.
