If you’re still not sure about the Mk V Toyota Supra sharing the chassis and powertrains of the G29 BMW Z4, I’ll remind you that chances are the Supra will keep its internal combustion soul for another generation, while the current Z4 is most likely the last of its kind. So, how about virtually expanding the link between the two by looking into their past? Enter a CGI-modernized BMW Clown Shoe, a beefed-up BMW Z3 Coupe that would go head to head with the present A90 Supra in truly unconventional fashion.
Before the present generation, there was no link between the Supra and the Z4 or Z3 that came before the latter. And that’s all the more reason for us to imagine one with the help of digital artist Al Yasid. You see, the London-based pixel master has decided to bring the infamous BMW Z3 Coupe “Clown Shoe” into the 2020s with some highly detailed 3D work—we added a photo of a real A90 Supra next to the rendering for the intro photo of the article.
When the Z3 Coupe came out in 1998 as a compact 2-seater sports car, the Mk IV Toyota Supra, which was more of a grand tourer, was going into retirement. In those days, BMW fans weren’t getting the mixed feelings the brand’s aesthetics deliver nowadays, so the shape of the two-door was quite a shock.
Nowadays, the coupe has become a modern classic and it’s also aided by its rarity—even if we look past the Z3 M Coupe range-topper, which currently trades hands for an average price of over $40k, you’d still have to pay somewhere around $18,000 for a proper-condition example of the in-line six machine.
The modernized classic that is this BMW Clown Shoe
Well, as stated, Al Yasid gave us a modernized classic instead. As such, the artist’s Z3 Coupe uses a styling language closer to that of contemporary BMWs (cue to the super-sized kidney grilles). Even so, it also borrows visual elements from other parts of the motoring world. So yes, that’s a Viper-inspired posterior!
The straight-six power is very much present, with the Bavarian engine enjoying individual throttle bodies. And, also a la Viper, the unit sits below a clamshell hood.
So, what would you drive? The time-traveling Z3 Coupe or the A90 Supra? One way or the other, you’d have to deal with numerous critics. And while we’re not sure how that makes owners of the Toyota feel, it’s no secret this has become part of the vehicle’s appeal for many drivers of Clown Shoe Bimmers.
