With the obvious exception of the Cybertruck, the Hummer EV is still the craziest production pickup on the planet. We’re talking about 10,000 pounds, $110,000, and up to 1000 horsepower. However, that wasn’t enough for somebody in Florida, who built the first Hummer EV “whip” by installing 30-inch wheels on this mother trucker.
It’s not as easy as just bolting on bigger rims and calling it a day. There are cultural as well as mechanical aspects to consider. For starters, what is a whip? Well, some of you might know them as “donks”, although the term strictly applies to the 1971-1976 Chevy Caprice.
The point is, that people in Florida love putting big wheels on all kinds of cars. It started many decades ago with classic American cars, but now everything can be a “donk/whip”, from German sports cars to Japanese SUVs.
But there’s nothing quite like this Hummer EV whip. As we’ve mentioned, the GMC pickup truck is very heavy. It’s about 9,063 lbs (4,111 kg), but it can be even heavier with specific options. The battery alone weighs as much as a compact car like a Corolla or Civic. This is why these oversized wheels are solid blocks of metal. Spokes might snap off under the strain.
More specifically, this installation was carried out by House of Toys and consists of a 30-inch set of Corleone Forged Cadorna alloys. They’re custom-made for this vehicle and have a floating center cap with Hummer EV logos. No word on the price, but Corleone wheels are quite upmarket, present on many high-end builds. I think Rick Ross has several cars kitted out in this way.
It’s not just the Hummer’s weight that matters. Each pothole and each bump probably doubles the strain to the point where every aluminum alloy probably withstands a couple of tons. And the GMC electric pickup can do things other vehicles can’t.
This video shows it doing the infamous “Crab Walk” essentially turning with all four wheels. The Hummer is thus going diagonally down the road.
And while not every Hummer EV has 1000 horsepower, even the base models with dual motors make 570 hp.
The Hummer is surprisingly suited to the “whip” makeover. Many cars require the body to be cut for clearance, but this electric truck can be ordered with 35-inch mud-terrain tires, so there’s plenty of clearance. Essentially, you’re just up-sizing from the factory 22-inch wheels to 30s with very little room for rubber.
